The Forint is the currency used in Budapest and the rest of Hungary. Although Hungary joined the European Union in 2004, it has not yet adopted the euro as its currency and the forint remains the official currency of Hungary.
When buying your Forints in-store ask for a mix of denominations, as it’s handy to have smaller notes for small purchases, tipping or paying for taxis. Tipping in Hungary is widely practiced. At a bar you usual tip 300 to 500 Ft per drink and in restaurants you usually tip 10 to 15% of the bill.
